Most couples will search and search for the perfect elements to pull their wedding day together, but for Kathleen and Stephen, it seems that things just sort of found them. They recalled to us how they fell in love with the imperfectness of Grassmere Farms in upstate New York. At the time of their first (winter) visit, there were no windows, running water, or lights, but these were mere details in the grand scheme of things. They knew that this was just the right kind of rustic, raw space that they could dress up and warm up for their big day. The band that was destined to play at their wedding also came from the most unlikely of place: the New York City subway. Kathleen heard the buskers while on her commute, and she knew she had found the right sound for the day. Every element selected to be included in Kathleen and Stephen's wedding day was special and meaningful to them, down to the release of Chinese lanterns, Kathleen's family's cottage tradition. But perhaps the sweetest of all was the presence of their adorable dog Olive, who got ready with the girls, walked down the aisle, and mingled with guests throughout the evening. She fit right into every part of the day as it unfolded, and there was no doubt about it: she belonged there.
Our congratulations go out to Kathleen and Stephen for not only tying the knot, but for doing it in such a wonderfully whimsical and unique way that was true to them. Well done, you two, and thank you for selecting Daniel and I to document it.
We often get asked what makes a great wedding. Is it location? A good looking couple? Nice decor? If we were to pick one single "thing" that makes a wedding great, it would, without a doubt, be great energy. The energy that is given off by happy, happy people has got to be one of the best things in the world. When we met Vanessa and Rob in Cape Cod, we felt that energy right away. The way they look at each other and laugh with each other seems as though they are in on a secret inside joke. Even if you're not in on it, you still can't help but smile. Their friends and family seemed thrilled to be reunited for the occasion, and there was a smilar sense of deep, longtime friendship among them. And if there is one place where the energy was at an all time high, it was certainly the dance floor! The awesome 90s hits they played had everyone - including us - in a blissfully nostalgic mood that spread across the packed dancefloor.
Continuing on the theme of energy, we stuck Vanessa and Rob out to the beach during dinnertime, just as a storm was rolling in. The wind was intense, but the sunset peeking out from behind those storm clouds was just stunning. Willing and trusting, these troopers trekked along on the rocks for us. The whole ordeal lasted all but a few minutes, and we returned with out-of-control windswept hair and sandboxes in our shoes... but we were giddy. It kind of felt like now the four of us were in on a secret, having experienced this mini adventure together.
Vanessa and Rob, thank you for selecting us to capture the wonderful energy of your wedding. You can see out favorites by clicking on the arrows above.
From inside the stunning candlelit ruins of San Jose el Viejo, on the night of her wedding, Kristiaan told her guests that she and Lionel chose La Antigua, Guatemala because they wanted their guests to have an experience. I can't think of a better way of describing this wedding... what an experience it was. Daniel and I spent 3 whole weeks in Guatemala, first taking a Spanish class (y nuestro Espanol es mucho mejor ahora!) and then just taking in this incredible place. Slowly but surely, Kristiaan, Lionel and their wedding guests started to arrive. With every new arrival, the group got better and better; their families warm and welcoming, their friends an absolute blast. And Kristiaan and Lionel, well, we just adore them (they are also wedding photographers so they are obviously good people!). By the end of it, we had several sincere invitations to family dinners and one honorary adoption from Kristiaan's mom (hi mama Karen!).
To kick off their five day wedding experience, Kristiaan and Lionel organized The Amazing Race Antigua, a treasure hunt around the city. Daniel is proud to say that he led his team to victory (I'm still bitter about my team's loss...) and the event certainly brought everyone closer together, competitive spirits and all (I am perhaps referring to myself a little...). The eve of the wedding day began with an early morning volcano hike and ended with a salsa dance party with entertainment by Ignacio Perez Borrel, one of the original members of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club. After the wedding we followed Kristiaan, Lionel, and a few of their close friends to beautiful Lake Atitlan where we explored remote villages, feasted on homemade meals, and napped in hammocks overlooking the vast lake.
But also, of course, there was the wedding day. Filled to the brim with joy, love, and beauty, it was impossible not to get completely immersed in it all. We were spoiled with the magical combination of emotion and stunning location. La Antigua is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful places we have ever visited... so much so that I can't find the words to do it or this wedding justice, so have a glimpse at their full slideshow instead, by clicking HERE.
Following an engagement session in Miami, we made the beautiful drive down to the Florida Keys for Carolina and Norman's Key Largo wedding. Having met them in New York last summer, we already knew that they are the sweetest, most adorable couple. Carolina is so beautiful, she looks like a doll that I just wanted to photograph all day long! Norman is Nicaraguan, Carolina is Columbian, and they met while living in Florida. Naturally, their wedding was a sweet celebration of their relationship, with many opportunities for us to brush up on our Spanish, and included lots of dancing! Carolina put so much care into making every detail of their wedding just perfect, including some adorable Scrabble name cards for every guest, that we are now proudly displaying in our office.
Their wonderful friends and families made us feel right at home the whole weekend, and we are both utterly infatuated with their hilarious English bulldog, Jordan.
Carolina and Norman, thank you for choosing us to document your oh-so sweet wedding!
