texas, y’all

posted by davina

howdy! i have to admit, i’ve always thought of texas as a narrow-minded and obnoxiously patriotic state. indeed, during our time there we saw dozens of anti-abortion billboards and heard the word “gay” being used as an insult, which was a little shocking to us. oh and that texan flag and star are seen everywhere! yet, despite this, we’ve still fallen in love with the state’s many qualities. austin and san antonio were a fabulous cities, the country-side is breathtaking, and we just can’t get enough of that southern hospitality!

it was texas’ birthday on our first day there so there was a ceremony taking place at the alamo in san antonio:

we had such a fantastic time at pete’s dueling panio bar in austin. it was recommended to us and we highly recommend it too.

i was hoping to get my next tattoo done at some point during this roadtrip so when we passed about a dozen tattoo shops in austin, i knew it was time!

mmmmm… southern breakfast! (isn’t daniel adorable in his plaid shirt? he saved it for texas)

those southern sunsets are getting more and more beautiful every day.

we were in new mexico today and it was uh-mazing! we’ll be posting those photos soon so stay tuned!

March 5, 2010 - 11:49 pm kathleen - incredible... I love the sunsets with the elk (I think) especially!

March 5, 2010 - 11:52 pm ed atrero - lovely photos guys. see you sunday! lazerrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzz!!!!

louisiana

yesterday was one of our best driving days so far on this trip. as soon as we got out of new orleans, we took a detour towards the gulf of mexico, to get a chance to drive along the water. what we didn’t realize was that the drive-able stretch along the coast was only a few miles long. we battled through a pretty major rain storm and took a ferry to get there, but it was well worth it! the sun was just about to start setting on one side, and the storm clouds were still behind us, creating very dramatic skies. after dark, we decided to drive all the way through houston, into san antonio, which we are going to visit today before driving over to austin tonight!

davina took this picture of me while i was trying my best to get the photo above.

we stopped to take this photo, set up, and as soon as we were ready, the rain came down on us.

those are all oyster shells:

new orleans

ah, the big easy… what can i say? we just fell in love! the architecture, the music, the history, the people, the spirit… it’s contagious!

we tried to soak up as much of the city as possible by walking around until we were exhausted. daniel couldn’t stop taking photos of the people, i got my palm read, and we indulged in some of the local delicacies (fried alligator, gumbo, crawfish, rice and beans… mmmmm!). we even got to experience some belated mardi gras festivities on saturday night and i proudly earned some beads (no, i didn’t have to be too slutty, don’t you worry!). look how proud i was! (my tongue is a result of a hurricane, the signature drink of mardi gras):

and here’s the french quarter:

and of course, all the musicians…

this guy was pretty amazing, rockin’ in the middle of the street on a sunday night

out on the bayou

a swamp tour was another must for us while we were in louisiana. while this is a tad touristy, it was a great experience to see a side of this place that we can’t see from the road. we saw many different birds, turtles, snakes, but no gators, unfortunately. i did get to hold their rescued baby gator though! it took a lot of willpower to not sneak it in my pocket and bring it back home as a friend for coco.

we got to witness up close some of the destruction hurricane katrina left behind in 2005

March 1, 2010 - 2:29 pm magali - swamp tour is so cool. good thing you have will power though cause coco would have soon become food for her friend.

March 2, 2010 - 12:37 pm Michelle - OMG I want a baby gator too!!

March 5, 2010 - 4:39 pm arielle - the blue house... sold!

oak alley plantation

posted by davina

our weekend in “n’awlins” has come and gone and we’re already on the road to texas. it was such an amazing weekend that we didn’t have time to share any of it with you so i’m taking the time to do this now. we knew louisiana was going to be one of our biggest stops because there was so much we wanted to do and see. we were lucky enough to have some fantastic weather which just added to our glee!

our first stop was oak alley plantation, about an hour outside of new orleans. there are many plantations open to the public for tours in this area, but we picked this particular one for purely superficial reasons; it was the prettiest!

the alley of oak trees, which gave the plantation its name, was planted by an unknown settler in the early 1700s. later, a wealthy frenchman purchased the land and built the mansion to convince his younger, socialite wife (i picture paris hilton) to leave her party life in the city and become a good plantation wife in the country. he was only somewhat successful in achieving his goal as she managed to stay there with him for a while, throwing some parties in their home for a change, and he, along with the many slaves who worked on the property, grew sugar cane. eventually, “paris” moved back to the city with their kids and they say plantation hubby was so depressed he eventually died. wifey couldn’t handle the plantation on her own so she passed in on to her son who couldn’t handle it either and eventually lost it. it stayed abandoned for a while and a herd of runaway cattle even moved in for a while, totally destroying the marble floors and probably not doing a very good job of maintaining the charm. it was only once another wealthy couple purchased the home and remodeled it in the early 1900s that the mansion became what it is today.

we weren’t permitted to take photos inside the home, but it was pretty amazing to visit. still, my favorite part of it remains the grandiose oaks. i really don’t think the photos do this place justice, but here are a few to give you an idea:

March 1, 2010 - 2:45 pm kate - while i find the houses to be beautiful, i still have a sick sick feeling in my stomach about the entire plantation vibe.

March 4, 2010 - 4:23 pm Irene - It should be incredible energy level there! Oak is famous for its burst of energy

March 4, 2010 - 7:04 pm Ericha - Beautiful!! There is just something about the south that I love so much.

March 5, 2010 - 7:11 am Lisa - WOW. Those trees are breathtaking!

mississippi

after our short stay in memphis, we hit the road for new orleans. unfortunately, it was raining the entire way so we didn’t have a chance to enjoy the back roads as much as we would have liked. nevertheless, at some point we took a few exits from the highway and ended up on a dirt road through some pretty amazing trees.

March 1, 2010 - 11:45 am joey - That's a really cool road, must of gotten the bimmer quite dirty! :p

March 4, 2010 - 7:02 pm Ericha - I love that 2nd photo.... great looking trees!

graceland

posted by davina

no visit to memphis is complete without a visit to graceland (or so we hear) so despite the fact that we’re both a little young to know much about elvis, off we went! even though the admittance is way overpriced, we’re so glad we went to visit the place the king called home.

us, with some of elvis’s many awards

of course we signed the wall!

February 28, 2010 - 1:32 pm Joey - It's cute, you guys are geeky with your audio guides and Davina with your glasses! Hehe :)

March 1, 2010 - 2:34 pm magali - audioguides are the best. joey should make a team with cassie.

memphis… not so much.

posted by davina

ok, so memphis wasn’t very good to us. it was really cold, beale street was a ghost town, and the one restaurant we went to had such terrible service that we left before we even had a chance to order. after having such a great time in nashville, we weren’t going to let this bring us down, so we made the best of it and still enjoyed victorian village, a stop we had been looking forward to making on the outskirts of memphis. these victorian homes, built during the mid 1800s, are so beautiful and have a definite hint of spookiness. we walked up to one and were just waiting for a creepy old lady with gray hair to come out and put a curse on us or something!

February 28, 2010 - 12:39 pm amy - do people still live in them? I looooove old houses, I want to see more pictures!

March 1, 2010 - 1:45 pm admin - most of these are now museums. we have some more photos we'll show you when we get back!
