’til we meet again.

my dearest blog readers,

as you know, i spent the last two weeks in mexico. during this time, we attended the most amazing wedding, that of our friends and photographers, ben and erin chrisman. we then spent a whole week in puerto vallarta, where we will be tying the knot next april. we encountered many obstacles, mainly due to the time at which the sun sets. it was really tough and emotional for both of us to realize that the wedding we had envisioned may not go as we had anticipated, but we found ways around it, and we’re coming out of it very pleased with ourselves – not to mention incredibly excited for our wedding to finally arrive!

but i also had a lot of thinking time. time to think about what i want, for one thing. i’ve been struggling to find the time that this blog deserves. after much thought, i’ve decided that it is best for me to stop. i’d love to keep updating you during these last few months of planning, but they’ve turned out to be much more intense then i could have ever anticipated. i just don’t have time to do this anymore.

i can’t thank you enough for all your support and suggestions throughout this process. i feel so lucky to have had all of you come along with me for this crazy ride! to be honest, right now, i’m just as unsure about what the end result will look like as you are! but i know that i’ve got the right man by my side. and after all, isn’t that really what all this fuss is for?

look out for photos of our wedding on our blog, after april 23rd, 2011!

davina xoxo

December 3, 2010 - 4:01 pm kathleen - Glad y'all got to go spend a week where your wedding will be! I hope it all works out as you now envision. I'll miss this blog but definitely understand how you have no time to keep it up. Can't wait to see pictures of the lovely affair. Best wishes!

December 3, 2010 - 4:46 pm ben chrisman - you and daniel are going to have most incredible wedding ever. i can't wait.

December 3, 2010 - 5:04 pm Sonia Palik - Hey there Honey, I know that your wedding will be wonderful. But don't forget, it's just a day. What will last is the love and devotion that you and Daniel have for eachother. Uncle Zdenek and I eloped, and we have been married for 35 years. No beautiful wedding and no wonderful honeymoon. All that is icing on the cake, it's the vows that you both keep that are important. I just know that you two will have a wonderful life together.....in fact .... I am possitive! Love you Aunt Sonia

December 3, 2010 - 10:56 pm Leigh - aaaahhhh dav, what the hell am i gonna read? you write a damn interesting yarn, and i wish you luck with the next stage of planning/thinking/dreaming for yours and Daniel's big day. :D thanks for being a little bright spot in the internetty world...

December 3, 2010 - 11:27 pm Frances - Oh Davina... I've been such a silent follower of your blog, but I've been here, looking forward to every time there was an update in my FB feed. And I get it. Planning, in itself, is an all encompassing whirlwind. You've been amazing and giving to share it with the world all this time. It isn't so much the details that kept me coming back, but witnessing your deliberations and decisions, your creative insights, your easy prose, and your myriad of sudden "coup-de-coeurs". You've inspired me long before I was even engaged, and I'm sure you've provided inspiration and entertainment to so many more. Thank you! And, enjoy the rest of the journey with Daniel. (Psst see you soon!)

December 10, 2010 - 10:41 am magali - I think it will take a while before I loose the habit of checking this blog! :(

December 10, 2010 - 8:33 pm Rebecca - Aw, that's too bad! I really enjoyed reading your blogging adventures... Thank you for all the great ideas and inspirations! You will be missed! Can't wait to see the pics! :)

January 7, 2011 - 5:13 am Julia - Really enjoyed your posts and finds but such is life eh? Can't wait to meet you and Daniel in June!

another…

…great idea for displaying photos at a reception. this is similar to the idea i posted recently, only this one used empty vintage frames in the mix which i also really like.

in related news, we’re leaving for mexico TOMORROW. we’re shooting one wedding, attending another and then heading over to puerto vallarta to take care of some business for our wedding (eeeeeee!). next friday we will be visiting the villa where our wedding will be taking place… for the first time (eeeeeee!). we’ll scope it all out, hopefully take lots of photos to share with you, and of course, find a good spot for this hanging photo idea!

see you in 2 weeks!

November 15, 2010 - 1:09 pm magali - HAVE FUN!!! can't wait to hear all about it!!! so you are not blogging for TWO WEEKS?! that's not good for my mental health!

welcoming our guests

ok. so. daniel and i have been getting a lot done these days, in the diy-project category, as well as the decision-making and reservation/booking categories. good stuff. we are happy campers.

we still have a few paper good to put together: menus, place cards, and welcome packages. we’re trying our best to simplify things (i know what you’re thinking: davina? simple? since when?), so i’m thinking of doing a cute, self-contained information pack like this one:

or maybe just a strip of wrap-around paper, like this one:

apparently there are two people involved in this wedding (go figure) and in this case, my other half has requested to take care of stationary. so here we are. daniel, excited about designing our paper goods. me, relinquishing some control… letting someone take over…

to be continued…

lovely lilac

as you probably know by now, i’m not a flower person. i’m not really planning on having flowers at all at our wedding (i myself will likely be foregoing the bride bouquet tradition), except maybe bouquets for the bridesmaids to somewhat tie them together since they’ll be in different dresses. anyhoo, i’m still mulling over my different options. in the process of searching i came across this beautiful lilac bouquet. it won’t work for us, but gosh is it ever lovely! and it’s something i’ve never seen before, which is really rare at this point! this would probably be the world’s easiest diy bouquet too – old pearls, ribbon, and few branches from a neighbor’s lilac tree and you’re ready for your walk down the aisle!

November 10, 2010 - 12:20 pm magali - that is pretty. but what do you mean you wont have flowers? what about those back and white ones you love so much?

November 10, 2010 - 10:26 pm davina - there is a big IF with the anemones: i want them IF they are actually available in mexico, but it's not looking good.

November 14, 2010 - 8:22 am magali - that is le sad.

woodsy

how enchanting is this ceremony set-up? candles and birch “stools” for guest seating… it takes real vision to pull this off but it totally works. although i’m not sure how comfortable that seating would be… but hey, it’s pretty!

November 8, 2010 - 8:32 pm leigh - my best friend did the stump thing as aisle markers and holders for her mason jars filled with wildflowers. it was stunning! check it ouuuut. http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=1457670693690&set=a.1457667573612.2058348.1591067054

done and done.

last friday, a few of my bridesmaids (arielle, marie-eve, kate, and lisa) and daniel’s sister (elyna), joined me for an evening of crafting and cupcakes. it was so wonderful to spend some time with these amazing ladies and to have their help on a few time-consuming wedding projects.

we got quite a few things done, including cutting, folding, sticking and stuffing our confetti envelopes, which i will be bringing to mexico in 2 weeks to store with our wedding planner. in photoshop, i created a template (since we wanted a specific size and color), typed up the text, and printed 2 to a page to save paper and money. the key to making them look professional was my handy corner punch which we used to round the flap corners. my never-fail pritt roller made the sticking part easy (and fun! – seriously, this tool rocks) and our map stickers by cavallini & co sealed the deal once the confetti was successfully tucked away.

voila!

November 5, 2010 - 3:05 pm Lisa - Yay for corner punching and "pritting"!!! haha. I may have found my crafty side doing this project:P Had so much fun, Neens! :)

November 6, 2010 - 12:06 am Leigh - davina, i wish i could see this wedding on video! it is something of a testament to creativity and awesomeness. woman, you think of everything!!

statement piece

wow oh wow. this necklace kicks some serious ass. well, i mean, if necklaces could do such a thing.

it’s not available on net-a-porter anymore but it was last seen on sale for $591.50. not cheap, but definitely the type of accessory that makes the outfit. can you imagine this with a simple, a-line wedding dress with an open neckline? stunning.

November 3, 2010 - 11:34 am Lisa - The necklace you were telling us about!! Wowzers! Definitely lives up to your description!

the great napkin debate.

i have an important question. and i’m using the word “important” very loosely.

daniel and i agree that we like the idea of a napkin with a print to bring a little interest to the table settings (we’re thinking of keeping it pretty simple). so i found these at ikea thought they were perfect in a gray and white stripe. but daniel said it’s ghetto to have a paper napkin unless we’re having a country/backyard-ish wedding.

i know you are all pretty faithful to me as my beloved readers, but i’m giving you permission to disagree with me. paper napkins (the gray and white ones). yay or nay?

oh and i forgot to mention that these would set us back a whopping 6$ total. budget. buster.

November 2, 2010 - 11:40 am Melanie - why don't you find a pattern like that at a fabric store and make them yourselves ? you'll get the same look, but it won't be paper napkins, plus it'll be diy !!

November 2, 2010 - 12:04 pm magali - why not have a white fabric napkin with this paper one resting on top. like that we can put the fabric one on our laps and actually use the paper one (I doubt I am the only one who feels awkward about using the fabric napkin when its resting on your lap far away from your mouth). i find myself quite brilliant presently.

November 2, 2010 - 12:07 pm Mira - nonsense, just use the paper napkins. Napkins are used to wipe stuff of your face, not impress people. I would guess few people will notice, and if they notice they will think the napkins are pretty (because they are cool and hip and whatnot). M.

November 2, 2010 - 12:20 pm NailaJ - If you're having retro straws, the paper napkins fit! You could use them as decor as well as napkins but still have the fabric napkins for the sit-down dinner, as Magali so brilliantly suggested! I feel exactly the same way: I'd use the paper ones.

November 2, 2010 - 3:22 pm Julia - I'm digging these stripy napkins, have been using them at home lately. I think they work, I would just recommend getting extra.. since they're not quite as long-term use as the cloth ones!

November 2, 2010 - 5:11 pm Bec - We had paper napkins (nice ones) at our wedding and no one said it was hill billy-ish for us to do so. I mean, who remembers the napkins? I promise, our wedding was quite lovely (garden themed- there were canning jars involved) and I don't think the paper napkins ruined it. They're just going to get food and slobber on them anyway.

November 2, 2010 - 5:54 pm MC - I think the napkins are cute! Maybe you could use both? Like having the napkin wrapped inside the actual cloth one? I agree with the person above...life would be easier if you could always leave the cloth one on your lap and have something else to clean your mouth! ;)

November 2, 2010 - 6:26 pm T Dougherty - Sorry Davina, I'm going to have to agree w/Daniel on this one. But it really depends on the formality & level of elegance you are going for. The napkins are cute & perfect for a backyard wedding, but if you're shooting for a bit more upscale (even if it's a beach or casual Mexico desti wedding, fabric napkins are the more elegant way to go. Makes the reception a little more nice. Every detail counts & adds up to the big picture of the day. I love the first comment about making your own napkins. Also remember there will be picture of the details. If you're ok w/ having paper napkins as part of the images, then go for it. Don't get me wrong, the napkins are definitely adorable. This is your wedding, a special day and a few extra touches like fabric napkins makes things a little more special. Sorry if I added to the confusion. Just got married myself & am happy I splurged a little on some of the small details.

November 4, 2010 - 1:03 pm Rebecca - Yay for the napkins! They'll fit well with the straws for sure!

November 17, 2010 - 8:37 pm Angela - Hi - I am doing a vintage 1930's theme and the aqua polka dot is going to rock my world. If your friends judge you for using paper instead of cloth, then I'd suggest getting new friends :) Do whatever you want to do because it is your party.

puzzled

sometimes i feel like i’ll never see another new wedding idea again. and then i randomly come across cute little ideas like this puzzle guestbook alternative and i get excited. the puzzle is a photo of the couple, and each guest signs/writes a note on the back of one piece. pretty cute, right?!

October 29, 2010 - 11:37 am Melanie - I've seen this on etsy a few times! Very cool idea.

__________.

what’s with the post title, you might ask. that’s me, being speechless. speechless because i’ve been in love with my primarily gray wedding color palette for so long… and now i’ve seen it with nude. doesn’t this inspiration board make you want to let out a huge sigh?
